My Story
After 17 years, I am walking with Team Tiara for a great cause once again!
My previous walks were in Dallas, Texas, where we walked 60 miles in three days and slept in pink tents. This time, the walk is 30 miles, and we get to stay in a house – which is a relief, because I am not sure I could get in and out of a tent anymore!
When I participated in my first walk, I remember saying, “If they find a cure for one type of cancer, they will find a cure for all types.” At the time, I had recently lost my cousin to leukemia. As I write this, today would have been his 57th birthday. I walk in his memory, as well as my mother-in-law and so many others!
In the years since, far too many people I know and love have faced different types of cancer. I would never try to name them all for fear of unintentionally leaving someone out, but every one of their stories is part of the reason I am walking. I would be remiss if I did not mention that I am extremely blessed that both of my parents are cancer survivors.
This summer, my childhood and lifelong friend celebrated 10 years free of breast cancer. Those years have not always been smooth sailing, but I am deeply thankful that, unlike her mother, she is still here – still living, still loving, and still sharing life with her girls. Her strength and survival remind me why continued research, better treatments, and early detection matter so much.
I am walking 30 miles to honor those we have lost, celebrate those who have survived, and support everyone still fighting. This cause is personal, and every donation – no matter the amount – brings us one step closer to a future where fewer families have to hear the words, “You have cancer.”
