My Story
Do you remember when the word “cancer” was only spoken in hushed tones? Well, it’s time for me to start making noise and taking action against this disease that has affected my family and very dear friends! As I posted on my initial announcement that Gary & I are walking in our first Breast Cancer Walk with Pledge the Pink on October 25-27, 2019, we have several friends who are breast cancer survivors and a dear friend who was recently diagnosed and is in treatment as I write this letter. As most of you know, our 24-year-old granddaughter, Jordyn Pearson, has just been diagnosed with Stage 4 Sarcoma in her thigh that has already Metastasized to her lungs. She begins her 2nd round of chemo this week. Our brother-in-law, Kenny, was diagnosed in November with Kidney cancer and had to have his kidney removed. We lost Gary’s brother, Rick, last year to prostate/lung cancer. The list is endless! I can’t count the number of other relatives and dear friends that have been affected in so many ways by this dreaded disease. So…after just completing 2 knee joint replacements and all my PT – we WALK…
We are participating in the Pledge the Pink Walk that is taking place in just 5 months. This weekend-long event consists of walking 10 miles each day on Friday, Saturday & Sunday on 3 separate Islands in South Carolina. We have also committed to raise funds. Sure, it will involve major physical training and fundraising, but we believe in ourselves and in the support of both prayers and donations of our family and friends.
The money is used for breast cancer education, clinical care, early detection programs and support services, with a special focus on the underserved. I just received an email from Pledge The Pink Foundation with a statistic that I would like to share with you. The Foundation annually funds about 2500 mammograms for people that cannot afford one. Of the 2500, there are 300 people that have breast cancer. 12% of the mammograms for which the Foundation paid could potentially have saved the woman’s life. This effort needs to continue until the cause and prevention can be found.
