My Story

17 years ago my MIL was diagnosed with BC. My SIL and I raised funds and walked that summer for her but it turned into a mission. So many amazing people trained, supported, raised funds, cheered and walked and crewed along with me over the next 12 years. I made many life long friends and learned so much about research, advocating for those without financial means to diagnostic or preventative care, treatment support organizations, family support, and new treatment and equipment through events like AWBC and now Pledge the Pink.
Since My MIL was diagnoses I’ve met many amazing women and men who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. 8 years ago one of my closest and dearest friends was diagnosed with invasive Ductal Carcinoma. She was 32 years old, had a toddler at home, a sweet and kind husband, Parents who put travel on hold to come help and a tribe of amazing friends to support her.
She had surgeries and treatment that changed her body but never her spirit. There were a couple years where the cancer didn’t show up but she went out of her way to help others who were going through a scary BC diagnosis or treatment. When the cancer came back with a vengeance, she sought out drug trials and naturopathic as options were running out.
Then the CampFire hit and Cari and her family lost their home in Butte Creek canyon. She continued to be a mom, a wife, a good friend, work, go to school to pursue her MBA from a 5th wheel trailer while they planned to rebuild.
Just a few weeks after the fire, my other dear friend Jenni, AWBC walker buddy and now PTP walker, was diagnosed with BC. Cari jumped right in, “who’s her Onc, what does she need, how can I help?” Jenni was able to bounce ideas, ask questions, learn from Cari how things work on the side of a survivor because Cari was an open book of love and support.
We had so much fun together going to concerts, wine tasting, or just hanging out together. These last few months we’ve rallied for Cari, as her health dramatically declined. Covid canceled our plans to celebrate her 40th birthday in Vegas so we threw a mini surprise party in a beautiful backyard garden. We got to go up to Lake Almanor a few times, just us girls or with family. We decorated her whole house for Christmas before Thanksgiving so she could enjoy it with her family in their new rebuilt home. We had a Hawaiian Christmas party, we played cards and helped build a deck for her family. We went up to her house a d dyed her hair pink, had brunch, laughed a lot, dried a bit, hugged her, kissed her and said goodbye. She passed away that Monday February 1st. She fought so hard. She’s our guardian angel now.

This walk is dedicated to her. She would want people to know what their options are, where to get help, what organizations provide services and what the most up to date medical treatments are. Pledge the Pink is giving us not just a voice but funds to help people in need today and into the future.
