My Story

This year I decided to join Pledge the Pink in So. Carolina in the fight against breast cancer. This is a 3 DAY, 30 MILES ON 3 ISLANDS for a cancer fighting, sweat breaking, bling earning, bestie bonding, island hopping adventure of a lifetime.
Why I do this: I am a SURVIVOR! I will be 12 years Cancer free November 27th. I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 37. I found a thickening in my breast and knew even though it wasn’t a lump I needed to have it checked out (thank God). I went to my primary doctor and he sent me to have a mammogram and ultrasound which showed a 3cm mass and I needed to have further testing done. My Doctor sent me to a Breast surgeon who did a needle biopsy in the office and felt that the thickening was much larger than what was showing on reports. I knew by what she was saying that it wasn’t good. I flat out asked her, “it’s cancer isn’t it”? She tried to reassure me that whatever the outcome was we would fight it together. I was referred to see an oncologist for consultation while we await the results. The needle biopsy results came back inconclusive but very suspicious and needed further testing. I had another needle biopsy only to receive the same results (UGH). The breast surgeon and oncologist both agreed we needed to move on this right away; because they all knew it was cancer. To confirm this I had to have an incisional biopsy done. They also wanted a port put in because I needed to start chemo asap once the results were in. The Doctor said when she opened me up the cancer was all up against my chest wall which measured about 8cm. The Doctor took a 3cm piece of it out to be biopsied which was the size of the mass the mammogram was showing. The report came back invasive ductal carcinoma ER PR +. I started chemo 2days after the biopsy. I had 8 treatments of 3 different types of chemo then a mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction which showed one of my lymph nodes was positive. About two months later after my incisions were healed enough I had 33 treatments of radiation. What a whirlwind. Everything happened so fast and I felt I really didn’t have time to digest everything coming at me when this was going on. I can tell you one of the biggest things that helped me get through all of this was talking with other survivors who understood what I was going through and helped talk me through a lot of it. I’m so thankful I had so much support from my family, friends and coworkers. You see, without fundraisers like Pledge the Pink to help support survivors, cancer treatments and research we would not have come as far as we have and I might not be here. So, Please donate even if it’s just $5.00 every dollar counts.
Thank you for your support,
