My Story
Hello, My name is Abby Harvey. I am a breast cancer survivor and thrive as a 5 time organ transplant warrior.
My journey began as a young kid when I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. Being a childhood diabetic had its challenges but overall I thrived. I was an athlete and never let life’s challenges stop me. Fast forward to 2010. I broke my left foot running and never knew it. I thought I had just sprained it, as did the doctors. The imaging showed no breaks but did show abnormal bone growth meaning I had fractured my foot several times and never realized it. 3 months later I found myself in septic shock. The sprain was actually a small fracture on the bottom of my foot that was not seen with imaging. The bone in my foot had gotten infected and went septic. I was hospitalized for over a month. The infection took hold of my body shutting my kidneys, liver and even taking a toll on my heart. Months of antibiotics saved me but ultimately I lost my kidneys, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by an amazing family and friends. I was able to receive a kidney from my aunt.
With organ transplants comes strict regimens, countless meds and staying vigilant with bloodwork and doctor appts. Over the course of 9 years I received a kidney and 2 pancreas transplants.
In 2019, I went into full kidney rejection , putting me back on dialysis and back on the waiting list, but I stayed obedient and put my faith in God. I transferred transplant hospitals to Emory University in Atlanta.
February 2021 was my day! I received a dual kidney/pancreas which I am still thriving with and I have been insulin free since my surgery. BLESSINGS!!!
6 months after my transplant, I found a lump in my left breast. This would be the second, as I had a scare in 2014, which was benign. This was different. I felt different and I knew something wasn’t right. I was warned from the beginning that transplant patients are at higher risk due to medications and weakened immune systems. I also had a strong family history behind me.
I was given the option to wait it out and see if it grew or changed . Biopsy was not an option as it was risky being so close to transplant. Long conversations with my husband and we decided to go ahead with the mastectomy. In 2022 I underwent a double mastectomy. I felt confident and felt good about our decision.
The biopsy of the tissue was benign, but the lymph nodes were not.
Thank our Heavenly Father for giving us the wisdom to not wait!!!!! I was the lucky one!! I did low dose chemo for 3 years for treatment, prevention and for my transplanted organ life. I have been off chemo for a year and I have never felt better.
I read a quote that changed me, it said, “ one day you will tell your story, about how you overcame what you went through, and it will be someone else’s survival guide.” I live my life with faith, optimism and love.
I have done PTP since 2016. I always walked for other people. Now I walk for me and so many like me.
