My Story
Y’all know me. I’ve done plenty of other charity walks. I’ve shaved my head for kid’s cancer research. I believe that we all need to find what we can do, and then do it. And while I’ve never experienced the awfulness of breast cancer, I have experienced the horror of hearing I had *something,* and that it was undefined, unknown, and very well could be Something Really Bad.
Both my parents had cancer–kidney and lymphoma–and survived, until other things took them from this earth. But they lived long enough to know that I’d done my first breast cancer walks, and it mattered to them. Cancer sucks, and to be even a small part of what might be the event that funds the dollars that find the cure, they recognized it was important.
Y’all also know I am absolutely terrified of flying. I had a complete breakdown in the LA airport and wound up having to go home, missing my own mother’s funeral. She would have been okay with that. She would also cheer me on, knowing I’m going to fly all the way across the country for this.
Finding the answers matter that much to me.
And I have lost friends to breast cancer. One who went through treatment at the same time I was facing a brain tumor. Another who found out too late.
But I’ve had more friends survive–and that’s the point. This event celebrates both those who have passed on and those who are still here to tell their stories. And those closer we get to a cure, the more stories there are to tell.
In 2020, I will make sure nothing gets scheduled that might interfere with this, I will train, I will get in that flying lipstick tube, and I will walk in South Carolina.
500 miles, 500 more, until the day we cross the line after that last mile…
