My Story
Why I Walk for Breast Cancer
Though recently being diagnosed with Breast Cancer, I have supported multiple breast cancer walks during my lifetime. I performed the walks in support of my friends who had become inflicted with Breast Cancer. Then my life shattered with the unknown and the realization of being told that I had Breast Cancer. As many who know me know, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Jan 2020. Based on discussions with my Doctor, I underwent a Bilateral Mastectomy on February 26 and had four additional surgeries due to complications. The final surgery was performed on June 2, 221.
I was very fortunate that it was diagnosed early, and surgery resulted in me being cancer free and not being subjected to chemo or radiation treatment. A friend who I do the walks with me reminded me that at one of the opening Aven walks they said look around 1in 8 of you will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I never in a million years thought it would be me. I had no family history of Breast Cancer, so I thought I was immune.
In October 2019 I signed up for my second Pledge the Pink walk for 2020 never imagining that it would mean so much more to me doing it as a survivor. My friend said to me we are doing this walk if I have to push you in a wheelchair. The walk that year was cancelled because of Covid. We signed up and did the walk for 2021, 2022, 2023 and now are planning on doing the 2024 walk. These walks fund the research that is vital to finding a cure to prevent inflicting this to future generations of men and women. It is so empowering to be surrounded by so many women who have survived this deadly caner. I thank God every day that I am a survivor and pray that I remain cancer free. Emotionally it has been the hardest thing to deal with. I can honestly say that it wasn’t until January 2022 that I finally felt like my old self.
Plese join me in my fundraising to support Breast Cancer Research. I am walking in the Pledge the Pink 3-day 33.1 mile walk on Oak Island my hometown. Please consider donating whatever you feel comfortable with, every little bit helps.
Thank you for your support in this battle against Breast Cancer,
Dolores Kirwin
