My Story
I was a Newbie for Pledge the Pink 2019, (a walking event in the fight against breast cancer). I registered for Pledge the Pink in January 2019 before realizing just how bad my arthritic knees were. It was in March that x-rays showed “bone on bone” in both knees. I still wanted to participate and complete as much of the 3 day walk as possible … I didn’t do the 30 miles, but did about 15 miles. Yay! I wanted to take on this challenge, as the reason for this event is quite literally close to my heart, as a breast cancer survivor myself. (I also lost my mother to colon cancer in 1994. Cancer is my enemy.) So, along with the support of my team of cousins, we took on the challenge.
Before the 2019 event weekend ended, I registered for PTP 2020! It was such rewarding fun that my whole team wants to return (and a few others may join us) and we have all registered for 2020! … and I will have new knees by then! I also decided that I would be fundraising this year.
The mission of the Pledge the Pink Foundation is to provide breast cancer screening, treatment, and research. Specifically, their focus is funding mammograms, biopsies, clinic trials, research labs, and diagnostic equipment.
Did you know that $100 funds a mammogram? For every $100 that I raise, we could save that many lives with early detection. Early detection saved MY LIFE! Yes, early detection through a mammogram was my life saver. In May 2020, I will reach my five years of survivorship. I am so thankful!
