My Story
During an annual screening mammogram, doctors found 8cm x 4cm x 4cm of DCIS or Ductal Carcinoma In Situ….cancer. I was so fortunate to catch it early and, as a nurse, to have amazing resources. I also have a fabulous support system of family and friends.
Not every woman has these resources. I can’t imagine how different things would be if I had skipped this year’s mammogram because I couldn’t afford it. I can’t imagine how different things would be if the world of medicine didn’t know the things it knows now.
I am fundraising at a goal of $5K to support a local cancer survivorship center (1 of only 7 in the entire nation) called CANOPY.
CANOPY has a free resource library where you can come and take any book that you would like. I was given a FREE book on breast cancer, and 2 FREE cookbooks on healthy eating during recovery and for prevention, etc. They offer FREE wigs, breast prostheses, bras, drain holders (remember Satan?). They offer FREE nurse navigation to help walk patients through all of the procedures that might be encountered, and most importantly for me, they offer a FREE social worker who offers counseling and other forms of support. In addition, they have FREE yoga classes, FREE Tai Chi classes, FREE cooking classes, FREE support groups, etc. WHAT AN AMAZING RESOURCE TO HAVE IN HOUSTON!!
