My Story
Hi, I’m Monica and this is my sister, Jessica. We both had breast cancer. Early detection changed everything for both of us, and we want to encourage all women to get screened early. We are statistical outliers – it was completely shocking that as sisters we were both diagnosed with breast cancer within months of each other.
We’re sharing our story to inspire women to get checked with a mammogram, ultrasound, and genetic testing – as early as possible. Our story would be devastatingly different if we’d waited.
Breast cancer was never on our radar. It doesn’t run in our family – and really, what were the odds?
After Jessica was diagnosed with DCIS, I scheduled a screening. Shortly after, I was diagnosed with Stage 1B Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I’m 38 years old, it would have been another two years before I was in the recommended age range for a screening. During my lumpectomy, we learned the cancer had begun to spread into a lymph node. I’ve since completed six weeks of radiation treatment and am continuing on a five-year cycle of medication. Both Jessica and I did genetic testing for BRCA2. Jessica’s genetic testing was negative for BRCA2. My results were yet another anomaly. I have a rare BRCA2 Variant of Unknown Significance gene mutation (there’s not enough information about this mutation to classify it as harmful or benign, we have to wait for more data to be collected).
We’re young, healthy, strong, and know it would have been worse had we not talked to our doctors EARLY.
We’re so thankful for our amazing teams at Weill Cornell and UNC Rex who listened to us, advocated for us, and treated us with care and kindness.
