My Story
Thirteen years ago, on what seemed like an ordinary day, my life changed in a way I never could have imagined.
I wasn’t looking for it. I wasn’t expecting it. But I knew something didn’t feel right.
That moment began my breast cancer journey.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer and learned that I carry the BRCA1 gene. What followed was a difficult road of treatment, uncertainty, and emotions that are hard to put into words. There were days when I was shaken to my core and simply focused on getting through that day and night.
But being a BRCA1 carrier has meant more than facing my own cancer journey. It has also meant living with the knowledge that this gene can be passed down to my children. My daughter, who is now 26, also carries the BRCA1 gene.
As a mother, that is something that stays with me everyday.
Today, I am incredibly grateful to say that I am a 13 year breast cancer survivor. And I don’t take that milestone for granted.
That is why I am participating in Pledge the Pink at Oak Island, October 15-18, I’m walking for the women who are currently fighting breast cancer, for those we have lost, and for the daughters, mothers, sisters, and families whose lives have been changed by this disease.
I am also walking with hope, for my daughter and for all of the young women who carry the BRCA gene and are facing decisions and uncertainties that no one should have to face.
Thirteen years ago, I found a lump while putting on my sports bra and getting ready to go to the gym.
Today, I am putting one foot in front of the other for a very different reason. I’m walking because I am here. I am walking because I survived. And I’m walking for the women I love and the women who are still waiting for their own good news.
If you are able to support me, I would be incredibly grateful. Every donation helps, and every bit of support brings us closer to a future where fewer families have to experience what mine has.
