My Story
Hearing the phrases “life is full of surprises” and “expect the unexpected” thousands of times throughout my life did nothing to prepare me for the shock of a cancer diagnosis. But that’s exactly what I received in November 2021. The shock and fear quickly became crowded by the addition of an overwhelming amount of information and instructions and advice and medical appointments. The detection of my breast cancer was early enough and my treatment aggressive enough that less than 18 months after that diagnosis, I have finished my prescribed protocol and have grown back enough hair to warrant a trim! This journey has impressed upon me the importance of raising awareness about early detection and the need for continuing research. And it has also given me a new-found respect for what my body is capable of enduring.
I’m sure anyone who knows me knows how much I enjoy curling up under a blanket on the sofa with a good book. You’re all in for a surprise now because I am training for a 3 day, 33.1 mile run/walk! In October, I will participate in the Pledge the Pink fundraiser weekend. I hope my participation will show others, survivors in the thick of it especially, that there is hope of successfully completing their own journey through cancer. While I may not be able to officially declare myself cancer-free for a few more years, I can celebrate being free of chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries and all of the side effects they brought along with them. My body, after surviving sickness and the often harsh affects of treatment, is now growing stronger with each day I train. I’m looking forward to gathering with fellow survivors and showing them all what is possible. It would mean a lot to me if my friends and family would help Pledge the Pink reach their goal of raising $750,000 this year.
