My Story
It was a July morning in 2005. The phone rang early and it was my sister, I knew something was wrong, because she never called that early with the time difference between us. When she told me she had Breast Cancer, I remember sitting down in my yard, in the grass, the wind knocked out of me. She was only 38 and had young kids, how was this happening?
Naturally you go into “lets fix it” mode. What can we do, what needs to be done, and what does it mean for “us” as a family for the future. We always knew we had multiple risk factors for Breast Cancer, both our grandmothers had died, our maternal aunts had lost battles, and more closely, our cousin on my mom’s side, was diagnosed 3 years earlier at age 38.
After double mastectomies for both my cousin and sister, who were both BRCA negative, there were more procedures, more testing, more doctor’s appointments, and trial medications, but we thought we were the lucky ones, we were told it was gone. Go enjoy life. That was 18 years ago.
Unfortunately, May 2020, My Sister’s battled ended suddenly. We didn’t know it was back, we didn’t know it had metastasized. We didn’t know she would be gone without a fight. SHE WAS A FIGHTER. We didn’t know in 6 weeks she would be leaving young adult children, a husband, and our parents questioning, how did this happen and why us?
