My Story
t was a July morning in 2005 when the phone rang early. It was my sister, and I immediately knew something was wrong — she never called that early with the time difference between us. When she told me she had breast cancer, I remember just sitting down in the grass in my yard, completely stunned. She was only 38 with young kids. How was this happening?
You naturally go into “let’s fix this” mode. What do we do? What happens next? What does this mean for our family? Breast cancer had already touched so many women in our family, so we knew the risks all too well.
After surgeries, treatments, testing, and years of follow-up appointments, we truly believed we were the lucky ones. We were told it was gone. Go live your life. And for 18 years, she did, we did.
Then in March of 2020, everything changed. We didn’t know the cancer had come back or spread, or in just six weeks, we’d lose her. She was a fighter in every sense of the word. It didn’t seem real.
She left behind her children, her husband, our parents, and all of us asking the same question: why?
We all have a “why.” This is mine.
