My Story
Breast Cancer Awareness month is a cause I hold near and dear to my heart, as I’ve had many family and friends fight this disease, which I’m sure many of you can relate to. In fact, 1 in 833 men and a staggering 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime, so finding out early is crucial. When a friend of mine shared about this group of people that travel the Carolina coast (where I live) participating in a 3-day, 33.1 mile race to kick cancer’s can – I was intrigued!
Now, I can’t lie and say that the mileage didn’t intimidate me, but I do like a challenge and LOVE the cause, so I decided to join Pledge the Pink – an organization dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer by funding mammogram screenings, medical treatment, and research. I will be among 1,500 passionate people who will gather on October 19th in Oak Island, NC in celebration of survivors and in memory of those who gave it their all battling this disease. Then, we kick-off the challenge by knocking out 10 miles on both the 20th and 21st, and wrapping up with a half marathon on the 22nd!
Before I ask for your help, I want you to know that I’ve been putting in the work — if someone told me three months ago that I’d be doing 11 miles tomorrow morning (which is on my schedule), I’d ask them who was chasing me! I started training back in May and have been preparing every single day to honor this cause properly. So, with just under 100 days left to go, I promise to keep doing the “legwork” and ask that you donate to this awesome cause! There are two ways to help:
1. Sponsoring me directly by helping fund the $425 to race (message me for details; UPDATE: down $125 to $300 now!), or
2. Donating to my fundraiser goal of $5,000 on this page
Pledge the Pink disperses the funds to hospitals and clinics such as American Cancer Society, Mayo Clinic, Volunteers in Medicine and All In Foundation. For every $100 received, they will provide 1 free mammogram for someone in need. Remember, early detection saves lives – not just for women, but men too! Please let me know if you have any questions.
