My Story
It started with a box of 50 pink yard flamingos.
My sister Shannon had moved to South Carolina from Seattle as we were losing my mom to cancer. She mentioned something about wanting pink flamingos in her front yard because she was under the impression she was moving back to the warm south (little did she know it gets colder than Seattle here in the Upstate).
We were grieving and we needed to laugh. I flocked her yard on her birthday that year. She called, “…very funny, when are they coming to get them?” “Who?” I asked. “The place where you rented them.”
Once you have 50 pink flamingos you get creative with things to do with them. I could go into it, but this isn’t about the flamingos, or maybe it is.
Pledge the Pink’s been doing fundraising flamboyances (that’s the word for a flock of flamingos), each flamingo representing $100 raised for breast cancer charities. They have an ambitious goal: to get back into the Guinness Book of World Records this year for the biggest yard flamingo flock, and raise $1 million.
I got diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in December of 2025. Joining the Pledge the Pink Challenge reminds me I’m a tough cookie and am able help others with breast cancer. Some of you know I’ve been running races for over five years. My goal at PTP 2026 is to run the 10 miles a day, for three days in a row. It’s my only attempt at a marathon distance (spread out over a weekend full of flamingos, parties and silliness)!
There is some really amazing research being done on cancer right now. My hope is that funding the right projects will get us from treatments that haven’t much changed (though certainly gotten better) in 40 years to cutting edge technology like using green light and bacteria from the earth to kill tumor cells. It’s really exciting, sci-fi stuff. With the help of AI, clinicians are finding more cancer on mammograms at earlier stages. There is hope one day we can kick cancer’s can, but only if we keep supporting scientists and medical research.
Thank you for reading and contributing to my goal of raising $500 for the Pledge the Pink Foundation. I will be running for myself and other people who need a laugh while facing their fear, and I’ll be doing it flamboyantly.
