My Story
I am officially entering year two of being “cancer free”. While that is an amazing statement in and of itself, I have learned that healing is actually a continual process. These are not my words but something that I recently read: Cancer Changes How you See Life….Time feels more fragile, Small pains raise big fears, The future feels uncertain, joy comes with caution, hope learns to whisper and survival reshapes perspective. These words most likely resonate with anyone who has had cancer. They are not in the forefront of my mind but still there nonetheless and remind me that each year will continue to be a milestone for the rest of my life….. and I intend to always appreciate and celebrate the beauty of that.
To continue on with my “healing” I will once again be participating in Pledge the Pink’s 30 mile walk in Oak Island NC in October with my beautiful “flock” of family and friends, the Tickled Pink-Tini’s. Last year was an incredible weekend filled with love, laughter, hugs, tears, & most importantly, an invaluable reminder of just how precious friendship truly is. And we did it all while dressing up in costumes, actually getting some exercise AND raising money to continue to fight the Big “C”.
Pledge the Pinks mission is to grant critical funding to nonprofit organizations that provide breast cancer screening, treatment, and outreach programs, with a focus on underserved populations. I realize that I have been blessed to not have the additional worry of a financial burden which many face throughout this journey (thank you Medicare…I guess that’s one benefit of being old). My intentions through fundraising are to help as many of these individuals as possible. One of the many incredible aspects of PTP is that they will allow each team to select the organization that will be the recipient of the funds raised. To that end, we have chosen The Ladies of the Lake Cancer Support Team in Littleton, NC (my hometown) and whose organization I have recently joined. Ladies of the Lake Cancer Support Team is an independent 501c3 nonprofit group of dedicated women that has grown from 10 to 24 members since its creation in 2003. Their purpose is to offer direct financial support to cancer patients currently undergoing treatment in the five counties surrounding Lake Gaston. They also support local treatment centers and cancer foundations including Halifax Regional Foundation and CMH Foundation.
In order to be able to “choose our charity”, we must raise a minimum of $5000 so that’s our goal!! Please help us achieve this with any donation you are comfortable with. Our team is truly appreciative of each and every donation. Here’s to all the flock stars who will be walking 30 miles, their supporters and another step towards kicking cancer’s A$$. Peace & Love!
