My Story
May 2000 – 25 years ago! We were making a move from Johnstown, PA to Tampa, FL, not too unlike other moves we had made with my GTE/Verizon career; but, this one was going to be a life changer. We hadn’t actually moved into our home or made doctor/insurance changes when I found a lump in my right breast. Cue a whirlwind of appointments, panic and the stress of “getting all your ducks in a row”. I remember a lot from that time, but last month when we were back in PA my dearest mother in law handed me a folder of emails that I sent to family and friends chronicling that year of surgeries, chemo, radiation and reconstruction. Honestly, my 63 year old self is pretty proud of that 38 year old. Courageous, positive, determined and faithful are some of the big take a ways, with of course some lame humor.
Over the years I’ve done my best to be an encourager and spread the awareness message. I’ve walked in numerous 5K’s, two – 3/day (60 miles) and last year my first 3/day (30 miles). These walks have been in Florida, Oregon, Texas and Ohio, alongside many friends/survivors and raising at least $15K for the cause. I’m signed up to trek it out again to celebrate my 25 year survivorship with Pledge the Pink in October 2025.
Current statistics show only 11% of breast cancer survivors live 25 years after diagnosis. That number isn’t very high to me and quite frankly was shocking! Early diagnosis and treatment options are very effective. Self check and get a mamm – don’t skip and don’t think it won’t happen to you!
Every $100 raised funds a mammogram. I love that Pledge the Pink represents this with flamingos. The flock is AMAZING to see at base camp! Last year my donors put nine (9) flamingos in the flock! I brought one home and the names of those donors are proudly displayed on my flamingo. While raising funds is important, my gratitude for the emotional support and encouragement I receive from my family and friends is THE BEST! I’m blessed!
