Team Story
We met when we were around 7 years old about 50 years ago – 4 young girls that grew up together and still remain the sisters/friends they became so long ago!
We all grew up on Long Island and spent most of our lives there. 2 of us remain there and 2 of us have moved to Hilton Head Island.
When I moved to HHI a few years ago – I had just finished becoming a warrior – a survivor – a survivor of breast cancer. I needed something to fill my sole. I was lucky enough to find this great event PLEDGE THE PINK and volunteered – a 30-mile walk – 10 miles a day for 3 days over different islands and locations here in SC. That first year I stood alone in the early morning dark as a volunteer and they called the survivors up to start the walk off, I burst into tears as I looked around and saw all these women who have survived, I had sorrow and I had HOPE. I thought of friends and family who have suffered this terrible disease and I remembered my 3 best friends on Long Island who were touched by breast cancer – One who is also a warrior survivor from a pretty young age, she was the first person I knew to have this disease and she battled and beat it. Another has lost her mother and Aunt to this terrible cancer, and the other had a mother-in law who was a survivor warrior. Right then and there I promised myself I would continue to volunteer and do the actual walk for my 5 years clear, and I would call my friends – my sisters – my flock stars to make my team to walk. Well that time has come this is the year. I called my girls and said we must do this – you need to do this with me – no questions asked – they were on board. Our team is officially named IslandgirlsBFlocking. This year we will walk 30 miles in 3 days. We will laugh and cry and be proud to commit to this challenge and great cause. We create this page as a way to support other warrior sisters and to give to those who need our support with awareness, with their own battles!
In 2011, Pledge the Pink was a small, local, charity race—aimed at fighting cancer in South Carolina, and getting the lowcountry in shape. Now we’re an ambitious, not-so-small, breast cancer event that’s gotten almost 15,000 people off the couch and given over a million dollars to charities all across the country. Through there sister charity Pledge the Pink Foundation (formally known as Carolina Cups), these dollars provide gap funding for heroic, budget-restricted, nonprofit service providers. They are able to slice through red tape, and support game-changing beneficiaries across the country.
