While my personal journey began in 2022, my family’s journey began 20 years before that. My mom had breast cancer (twice) with surgery and radiation. Then in 2021, got Stage 4 lung cancer. Because she’d already had radiation on the left side for f her chest for breast cancer, she couldn’t get it again when she had lung cancer. When I got breast cancer in 2022, I opted for a double mastectomy. I didn’t want to get breast cancer again, I didn’t want the radiation AND I didn’t want to take the hormone blockers due to all the side effects they had. I’m glad I opted for the double mastectomy as the mammogram and MRI only showed cancer in my left breast. I also had cancer in my right breast – a more aggressive type. My goal for the rest of my life is to donate to causes that help people who can’t afford mammograms. One day my prayer is that mammograms and colonoscopies become free to everyone.
