In memory of my loving friend Mary Burke who died 6/19/24 of Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

My Story
Growing up Cancer was a word I had heard numerous times. Both of my grandfathers passed away from different kinds of cancer, and one of my grandmothers had multiple forms of cancer before she passed away. When I was a junior in high school I found a lump as well. After having it removed, I found out it was a benign tumor.
On one of my milestone birthdays I received a call asking if I wanted to participate in a Breast Cancer walk. It was going to occur on the 5th anniversary of my grandmother’s passing so to honor her I said yes.
That was the start of my journey. I created a list of names of my loved ones that had previously or were currently fighting cancer and I walked over 39 miles that first year. As the years have gone on, more of my loved ones have been diagnosed with various Cancers. I add names to my list every year of my loved ones and theirs. After 7 years, I now walk for 250 people and counting. I wear a list of each of their names on my backpack everyday of the walk so that they are represented.
I walk because as a single person, in 2 degrees of separation, I know 250 people that have heard “You have Cancer.” I walk in their honor and to do my part to help put and end to this terrible disease.
