My Story
You may be wondering why a design and remodeling firm and a cleaning service are sponsoring a cancer fundraising event.
The reason is Aurora Kitchens’ owner Kolbe Clark’s mother Susanne.
Susanne’s story:
Susanne is a breast cancer survivor. She’s passionate about spreading the word about early detection – getting regular mammograms and performing self-exams.
Susanne is one of the lucky ones. Her cancer was caught early and was a rare type that only required oral cancer medication after surgery. She didn’t have to go through radiation or chemotherapy.
“It was pretty scary to get the diagnosis,” Susanne says. “Until we got the biopsy report, I didn’t know what we were dealing with.”
Being in that state of “not knowing” is something many women have to deal with. In fact, you probably know someone who has been touched by breast cancer. Each year in the United States, about 264,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,400 in men. About 42,000 women and 500 men in the U.S. die each year from breast cancer.
Flamingos and Pink Tutus
One day when Susanne’s neighbor was out for an early morning walk, he saw dozens of women wearing pink ballerina dresses walking as well. Since his wife was a breast cancer survivor, he noticed and brought the walk to Susanne’s attention. The following year Susanne decided to get involved in Pledge the Pink.
“When I walked with Pledge the Pink, I was walking with young women who were survivors,” Susanne says. “One was 28-years-old!”
In past years, Kolbe and other family members have walked with Susanne in the Pledge the Pink Walk to support and honor her wellness and those of others who have been touched by this disease. This year Aurora Kitchens & Interiors and S&G Cleaning Services are sponsoring the Jersey Flamingos team.
The Jersey Flamingos will run, walk, and crawl 33.1 miles (over several days) to raise funds for breast cancer support and treatment on beautiful Oak Island, NC in October.
“I keep saying this is going to be my last year,” explains Susanne, who is 81. “This is my fifth year, and I’ve walked 30 miles every year. My nephew said, ‘If you’ve done 30 miles, you can do 33.1.’ It has become my mantra.”
Susanne has been training for this race. “It was easier before it’s been so hot. I was walking about 15 miles a week. Now I’m going backwards because of the heat!” she jokes.
What You Can Do to Help
Susanne’s dream is to raise $5,000, so that a portion can be earmarked for the charity of her choice, St. Peter’s Foundation.
St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick is where Susanne received her breast cancer treatment. She had an extremely positive experience there (which we’ll tell you more about soon).
In order for the charity designation to be made by the Jersey Flamingos team, a minumum of $5,000 needs to be raised by mid-September.
