My Story
I’m walking because I’m still here to help find a cure.
December 21, 2020, a day I will always remember. As I sat receiving my first chemo treatment after port placement the same day, I looked at my husband and told him everything was going to be ok. We sat in the dark room watching the Christmas star come together and I knew right then, no matter what else was thrown at us, everything was going to be ok. I was going to be ok. No one said it was easy, but I am ok and that’s all that counts.
After a friend was diagnosed earlier in the year with breast cancer, I knew I couldn’t miss yet another mammogram. And that mammogram saved my life. I was diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer in November of the same year. After 15 rounds of chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and a few complications from the mastectomy, I received the news that my tumor they removed also had HER2 positive in it. What did this mean? It meant that reconstruction had to get accelerated and I had to have a year of immunotherapy. I felt my heart sink, but I knew I had to do it. After reconstruction, a few additional surgeries, blurred vision and a year later, I was finally done. Once again, no one said it was going to be easy.
I participated in a couple of trials during this period. I thought, if my journey can help someone else, then let’s do it. Was I the unicorn and the perfect storm for these trials? Yes, I was. Did it make my journey a little more difficult, yes. Still, if it helps someone else’s journey, then it’s the right thing to do.
I have a tribe that has supported us, fought with us, lifted us up and loved us hard through this journey. They have never asked anything in return, and I know that I will never be able to repay them, nor do they expect me to. I also know they will continue to support me in whatever I can do so that no one else ever has to go through this. We are all in this fight together.
