My Story

19 years ago I lost my mom to metastatic breast cancer. 19 years ago I began trying to formulate a plan that I, too, would not succumb to breast cancer.

I became vigilant in seeking expert care from the Breast Cancer Team at MCHS. We developed plans for early detection screenings.

August 2025, it was my turn to get the call from the doctor “we found some suspicious cells on your MRI”. A whirlwind month of appointments and waiting led me to a bilateral mastectomy and immediate reconstruction. Early detection worked. Early detection found my ductal carcinoma in situ prior to invasion into surrounding tissue, sparing me from the need for an oncology treatments.

Seeing the skill, compassion, dedication, and patience of all of my trusted providers led me to feel compelled to participate in Hakuna Ma-Tatas group for fundraising to support these skilled professionals and the women who will hear the “we found something“ on the other end of the phone one day.
