My Story
Why I’m Walking for My Friend, Dr. Kathleen Long
This year, I’m walking in honor of someone who inspires me deeply—not only for her incredible strength, but for the extraordinary life she’s led in service of others – and that’s my friend, Dr. Kathleen (Kathy) Long.
After a 29-year career as an oncologist, my college roommate and friend of 47 years retired, having spent nearly three decades helping others face the same battle she never expected to fight herself. In her second year of retirement, during what should have been a peaceful, well-earned chapter of life, she received a shocking diagnosis: an aggressive, lymph node-positive breast cancer.
As if one cancer wasn’t enough, a follow-up MRI revealed a second, completely separate tumor in the opposite breast—another primary cancer. What followed was an intense and grueling journey: 6 rounds of chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, and 11 additional rounds of chemo as a precaution. And through it all, she fought with courage, grace, and a quiet determination that moves everyone who knows her.
Thankfully, she is now in remission and on Tamoxifen. Her outlook on life has shifted, as it would for anyone. She’s living each day more intentionally, savoring the moment, and beginning to check things off her bucket list.
I’m walking to honor her fight, her resilience, and her legacy—not only as a survivor, but as someone who has given so much to the cancer community both professionally and personally. I walk because cancer doesn’t discriminate, even against those who’ve dedicated their lives to defeating it. I walk because her story deserves to be heard, and because her journey reminds me why we must keep pushing for better treatments, more research, and hope for all those still fighting.
This walk is for her—and for everyone who’s ever been blindsided by this disease. Let’s keep walking, together.
