My Story
Why I Walk?
I walk so that no one will ever have to hear those three words: “You have cancer.” Those words can turn your world, and the world of your family and friends, upside down.
Every step we take has a story to tell. Here’s my story behind my steps.
Those who know me know that the role of caregiver isn’t in my DNA. However, I’m blessed to have a sister-in-law and older brother who took care of my mom with her dementia and metastatic cancer diagnosis. They were able to care for her until the very end, which was 15 years ago this past August.
My mom’s greatest joy were her children and grandchildren. She had an amazing way of making each of us feel special. Living on the east coast, I would come home for visits, and when you could still meet people at the gate, she would greet me with a hug, a kiss, sometimes a sign, and then hold my hand, telling everyone in the terminal that her baby girl was home. At home, we were always treated like royalty. She would always have your favorite cookies waiting for you in the cookie jar.
My mom was also a practical joker. She would buy me pink pajamas right before St. Patrick’s Day and then wait for us to stumble to the breakfast table so she could give us a loving pinch. Being a true mama bear, she was protective of her cubs and would show her acceptance of a person by pulling her souvenir Florida mug that had a gator at the bottom. She would wait for a reaction, and if none, she would go to her other souvenir cup, which was a true half of a cup of coffee (vertical), her way of giving your significant other the thumbs up.
The PTP Foundation embraces the ideals that my mom celebrated: family, faith, love, and hope. Together, my fellow walkers are raising awareness, raising funds, and supporting each other as we hope to cross the finish line that would read “cure.”
