My Story
My world was changed August 13, 2019, when I heard those words, “You have cancer.” I was a relatively healthy 37 year old with 4 children who kept me busy. My life revolved around my children, their schedules, I was an unpaid UBER driver, and was just living life.
Throughout my life, I have had several benign fibrosis cysts removed from my breast. In 2019, this was a routine surgery and the doctor thought nothing else of it. After my 2 week check-up from the removal of a cyst, the doctor confirmed this was not an ordinary cyst. It was indeed Breast Cancer.
My journey has been a long one. I have had Bilateral Mascetomy, 14 rounds of Chemo (every 2 weeks), 21 rounds of radiation, a year of monthly injections of Herceptin (a drug to help prevent re-occurrence,) a full Hysterectomy, and then finally DIEP Flap reconstruction on January 21, 2021. WHEW – what a ride!
I have two daughters – Cienna age 18 and Bella is 9 who I want to help advocate for. I want them to make sure they are aware of their bodies. I do not want anyone I know or love to have to go thru the ordeal that I went thru. Listen to your body! Get your check-ups! Don’t ignore things and put things off!
I have been very fortunate to have support along this journey from my family and friends. To continue with my healing process, I have decided to join a wonderful group of women called Kansas Walkers For Knockers! This is a group of various women from small town USA who are trying to do their part to make a world without breast cancer. They have worked tirelessly over the last 9 years, participating in Breast Cancer Walks around the USA, and have raised over $110,000 for research and under-insured women.
