My Story

In late 2016, I had just turned 41. I had my first screening mammogram after treatment for melanoma in 2009. It came back with a cluster of calcium in my left breast showing concern. Breast biopsy showed ER+/PR+ DCIS, but stage 0.. just prior to formation of a tumor. My treatment was easy… lumpectomy, a week of Savi radiation (which had JUST been approved for those under 50) and 5 years of Tamoxifen. Later in 2018, my mother was diagnosed with stage 1 DCIS with similar treatment but more aggressive radiation for 6 weeks and anastrozole. Not BRCA positive. My mother was later diagnosed with clear cell melanoma in 2019, and succumbed to side effects and infection from immunotherapy; I lost her in November 2023. I keep thinking, if I had waiting longer to get my screening mammogram, how fast would mine have grown? What trouble and fear would my family have gone through. I’m so incredibly thankful and grateful for the advancement in technology that diagnosed me so early, that cured me so early, and that my daughters in law, and even my sons, can rely on to protect them. I fundraise for those not as fortunate as me, and to continue the advancement of technology and medication to eradicate the cancer versions we can and lengthen the quality of life for those affected with what we can’t.
