My Story
Sea turtles are amazing creatures. Why? Because they always return to the same beach they were nested on. How would they know this? This is how they were created, born with the knowledge to live right from the shell. They are also incredibly resilient creatures.
When I was first going through treatment a friend of mine sent me turtles she even dubbed me “turtle girl”. Sea turtles have an incredible amount of faith, they pop out of the shell, climb out of a hole in an unfamiliar place and they walk straight to the ocean. I often think of my life as a mosaic or a tapestry but I can’t see the entire piece, only a very close part of it. As my life has gone on more has been revealed to me. I have been followed my entire life by a genetics specialist because what I have is rare; it’s called Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) Microdeletion. Mouthful isn’t it? This condition affects my entire body and systems. Because of it I have tumors everywhere.
In 2020 I didn’t know that the pain in my arm would begin a new chapter of my life but it did. That summer I had a tumor larger than a softball removed, at the post operation appointment I found out that it was cancerous and was regrowing in a slightly different place and that tumor is also cancerous. The name of the cancer is Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor. Because the cancer is so rare, fast growing and difficult to treat, it almost came to amputate my arm from the shoulder. But by God’s grace we went to another hospital for a second opinion, and I did radiation as a result of that. The next year I met my now lifelong friend Anthony Turbocast, wrote a children’s book ABC’s of Oak Island and by the end of the year I became an official member of the OKI pirates guild. I have been in plays, done many pirate events, I am working on more books and I even directed a children’s play.
So why donate? Even though I do not have breast cancer like many others who have cancer we are all at risk. Especially if you have radiation near the breast which I did. The combination of having the NF, already having cancer and being radiated near the breast puts me at higher risk for breast cancer. Which means I have to get screenings earlier than usual. So please, take a look at my crafts so we can beat the world record again and help support those with breast cancer and those who need earlier screenings. World records like this bring positive attention to cancer in general in a positive light in that even with cancer it is possible to thrive.
