My Story
Breast cancer can strike anyone at anytime. Even men. So very, very many lives are impacted or, worse, lost to this disease. Early detection provides for the best possible outcomes, and there is no good reason that cancer screening is not available to everyone, regardless of financial resources.
My sister-in-law, Wendy, and her family lost her mother much too early in their lives. Her story made me aware of how persistent and vicious this disease can be, even when every available resource is provided to fight it. I was privileged to walk Pledge the Pink last year with my dear, dear friend Kathy Schmidt who is a survivor and lost her mother a few years ago after multiple battles with breast cancer. The survivors and the supporters had such diverse stories of discovery, treatment and all too often, loss of life. Not only were they at this event to celebrate successes and to support each other, but they also demonstrated commitment to making resources available to underserved communities. They understood first-hand the benefits of early detection and a support network.
If you, like me, have not had this disease directly impact your life, please pay it forward. Your decision to make early detection possible for someone that does not have the access to a mammogram may save her life, or provide her and her family many more years together.
