My Story
My name is Cheryl Bruner, and I’m a proud breast cancer survivor. This is my story.
In July 2011, at just 46 years old, I went in for a routine mammogram. I had no idea that this day would mark a turning point in my life. Just three days later, panic struck when my doctor delivered the devastating news: “You have cancer.” In that moment, I made a promise to myself—I would fight with everything I had to be there for my children’s birthdays, weddings, and future grandchildren. The thought of leaving them behind was unbearable.
My journey began with a diagnosis of Stage 2 breast cancer, leading to a lumpectomy, four rounds of chemotherapy, 33 days of radiation, and a year of Herceptin. The treatment took a toll on my body; I lost my hair, struggled with fluid around my heart, and found it difficult to walk even a few feet without needing to rest. I pushed through, working to maintain my health insurance, all while trying to be strong for my 8-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son, not wanting them to see my fear. Thankfully, I had an incredible support system of friends and family, even those who lived far away.
Now, 13 years later, I’m thrilled to say I’m still cancer-free! Since my diagnosis, I’ve remarried, welcomed a grandson and granddaughter, and celebrated my kids’ high school graduations, with my youngest now a senior in college! I participate in Pledge the Pink because I CAN. The exhilaration of crossing that finish line after walking 10 miles each day is indescribable, especially on the final day. The connections I’ve made and the stories I’ve heard from fellow survivors are profound. While no one wishes to be part of THAT club, it’s comforting to share this journey with others who understand.
What I admire about Pledge the Pink is their commitment to the cause—every single dollar raised goes directly to support services like free mammograms and medical assistance, without the bureaucracy often found in other organizations. They truly make a difference!
Breast cancer touches so many lives. I know I wouldn’t be here today without that mammogram in 2011. Every $100 raised has the potential to save a life. I invite you to donate today to celebrate my 13 years of being cancer-free. No contribution is too small—together, we can make an impact!
