My Story
My name is Cheryl Bruner, I am a Breast Cancer Survivor and this is my Story…
In July 2011, at 46 years old, I had a routine mammogram. Little did I know that day would change my life forever. Panic set in just 3 days later with a call from my doctor who said those horrible words… “You have Cancer”. From that moment on, I vowed to do everything I could to be here on earth to celebrate my kids birthdays, weddings, grandkids, you name it. I could not imagine leaving all that behind.
My diagnosis and treatment for Stage 2 Breast Cancer consisted of a lumpectomy, 4 rounds of chemo, 33 days of radiation and 1 year of Herceptin. I was sick as a dog, lost my hair, and had fluid around my heart. I could barely walk five feet without resting but had to continue to work to keep my health care benefits. It took everything I had to be strong for my 8 year old daughter and 11 year old son because I didn’t want them to see how scared I really was. I had a great support system from friends and even family who lived very far away.
It’s now been 13 YEARS since my diagnosis. I am happy to say I am still Cancer Free! Since then, I got married (2020), have a grandson and granddaughter, and watched all of my kids graduate high school with my youngest now a Senior in College! I walk for Pledge the Pink because I can! The feeling that you get when you cross that finish line every day after walking 10 miles is exhilarating and so emotional, especially the last day when it’s all over. The people you meet, the stories you hear… is something that I just can’t explain. No one wants to be in THAT club, but it’s so satisfying to spend time with others that have been through the same thing you have been through.
Pledge the Pink, unlike other breast cancer charities, donates every single penny to the cause. They have no staff and pay no salaries. They provide funding directly to the non-profit service providers to offer free mammograms, medical assistance, and outreach services to the people that need it most – without all the red-tape and bureaucracy. They are AWESOME!
Most people know someone who has had breast cancer or has died from breast cancer. I honestly think, no I KNOW, I would not be here today if it wasn’t for that mammogram back in 2011. Every $100 raised is potentially one more life saved. Won’t you donate today? No amount is too small – won’t you donate to celebrate my 13 years cancer free ?
