My Story

Most of you know that over the years I’ve been committed to fundraising to support cancer research and the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. I’ve watched family members and friends valiantly face this disease. It’s in their honor that I’m going to participate in my first Pledge the Pink event October 19-22, 2023 at Oak Island, NC, where I’ll join 1500 women walking 33 miles over 3 days. I’ve been invited to join an amazing team (my friend, Anne and her daughters, Paige and Allison) who have already walked hundreds of miles together for this cause.

Those who know me, know I’m more of a spectator/cheerleader than an athlete, and that I’ve never intentionally walked 10 miles a day in my life. But, as my second favorite coach would say, I’m “all in” to walk this walk. I’m actually using terms like “training” and products like Glide and talcum powder on my feet. Who knew?

Please consider helping me honor these amazing cancer fighters, my family members and friends, with a donation to Pledge the Pink 2023: Kathy Nichols, Harriet Levine, Melissa Gorman, Karen Cox, Mary Hull, Carol Peters, Margaret Wilcox, Linda Mencarini, Nancy Skidmore Colaianne, Joan Jarcik, Betty Vukmanic, Anne Cermak, Carolyn Parker, Jewell Eanes, Kelly Bennett, Lynn Engeholm, Susan Fabrick, Kim Rempel, Bonnie Garmany, Barbara Evans, Beulah Besteder Corey, Shirley Lee. I’ll wear each of their names on a ribbon as I walk. If there’s someone you’d like to honor, send me their name, and I’ll add it to my skirt of ribbons. I’ll also be holding in my heart the memory of my friend, Dianne Hadley, who passed on October 22, 2022.

I love that the funds raised by PTP stay locally for the most part, and provide funding for women to have mammograms and follow up diagnostic care that they couldn’t afford on their own. There’s more complete information about this event at pledgethepink.com.
