My Story
This year’s walk has great meaning as I lost my mother this year in May.
She didn’t pass away from Breast Cancer or any Cancer, but she did battle Ovarian Cancer in 1975 and it did almost take her life.
Mom was 91 when she went to be with our Lord. She was old, had limited vision, hearing loss and was battling multiple seizures, which eventually did her in. She had a great life and an amazing Celebration of Life as a Wonderful Tribute to an Amazing Lady!
I lived with Mom for the past 5 years. We got through Covid together and then life started getting more difficult for Mom and I became her full time caregiver. Mom became my best friend and I really miss her. I am walking this year for Mom!
This is my 5th Walk with PTP!
Unfortunately, I won’t be doing much walking, as I have to get my knee replaced in late August, but I am still going to attend, volunteer and FUNDRAISE!
We have walked on Fripp Island, Hilton Head and Oak Island. This year we are venturing to Amelia Island, Florida to raise money for Breast Cancer Treatments and Research.
My friend, and former room mate at the U of D, Barb, and I have raised a substantial amount of money over the years to find the Cure for Breast Cancer. We have spent many hours walking, talking, catching up, laughing and being proud of our success for generating funds for the Pledge the Pink Organization. Our Team is now catching on to Fundraising too which enables us to raise even more money for a great cause.
In 2023 our Team, Breast Buddies Forever, raised over $28,000.00. The money helped to contribute to reducing the Costs associated with the Diagnosis and Treatment for Breast Cancer. And, 75% of the funds we raised went to a non-profit Breast Cancer Center of our choice. What an honor!
We couldn’t have reached this milestone without your support; Thank you so much!
Our Team, BREAST BUDDIES FOREVER 2024, will walk 30 miles over 3 days in honor of those currently fighting the fight, those who are in remission and in memory of those who are gone.
This Is Why We Walk:
Did you know that $100 funds a mammogram?
Which means that every 100 dollars you donate could save a life.
We recognize these heroic donations by placing a plastic pink flamingo in our annual Flocks of Love display for every two mammograms raised.
That means 10,000 men and women across the country will be able to receive free mammograms during the scariest 15 minutes of their life.
Luckily this disease has not affected me directly (and hopefully it won’t) but I have seen many of my friends, family and colleagues fight the battle; some with success and others not surviving the terrible disease.
It is my hope that Breast Cancer and other Cancers will be eliminated in my lifetime.
