My Story

I am so excited to raise funds to fight cancer with Pledge the Pink! They put all the money raised directly into the programs we raise the money for, not into producing/managing the walks or administration costs. They are all volunteers, and the administration and walks are supported by sponsors! God bless the PTP office staff for the hard work they do purely out of the love in their hearts!

Personally, I am a survivor of breast and ovarian cancer, and I deal with recurring basal cell cancer. I have dealt with the fears, the treatment, the huge bills. I have witnessed friends, family and acquaintances in the battle – some beat it, some didn’t, some fought incredible battles. My heart breaks for each of them. My fundraising is to honor them and I walk to celebrate each of them – their photograph goes with me.

When I lost my brother in 2016, I signed up for my first Avon 39 walk – I was in Memphis for his funeral and using a cane after just having back surgery! I don’t think my family expected me to do it, but I did that walk in June of 2017 with my sister Marcia. And I was so pumped, I signed up to do it again in 2018.

But Avon 39 then stopped sponsoring walks, so I joined others from my Solo Strutters team and walked in my first PTP walk in 2018 with my sister Bonnie. She and her family had just survived the 2018 category 5 hurricane in Panama City, but she and her daughter were right there with me. We weren’t able to do the walk in 2019 – her family was recovering after the hurricane, and I was laid off half of 2018, so have also been recovering financially this past year.

I signed up for the 2020 PTP walk on the same day a dear friend called me to tell me she had colon cancer. :-( I pray for a good report of her ultimate victory! This year is in her honor!

On the bright side, I have also started seeing articles about successes in new research and treatments, giving more hope to everyone in the fight!

Cancer has become all too common! We are all in the fight in some way, whether we know it or not. I have simply shifted from watching and occasionally donating, to advocating and openly fighting for resources. Resources that will sponsor research and programs that help individuals with rides, support, testing, and so many other things they need.

Not to get political, but our healthcare system is not supporting everyone in every way. Even if you have good insurance, you will likely have co-pays and other expenses that aren’t covered. Some medications/treatments are too costly and aren’t covered. People have to cut out things to pay the bills. Many earn too much to qualify for social programs, but too little to survive the massive debt.

That is why I am asking for your support. Please help me to raise the funds to help those that are struggling to get through their battles with dignity and take care of their families. And to support the research that is seeking cures for every type of cancer.

Thank you. God bless you.
